Description

L-CARNITINE

For Research Use Only | Not for Human or Veterinary Use

Description:
L-Carnitine (levocarnitine) is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesised from the amino acids lysine and methionine. In preclinical laboratory research it is investigated for its role as an obligatory cofactor in fatty acid metabolism, shuttling long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane as acyl-carnitine esters so they can enter beta-oxidation. It is also studied for its capacity to buffer the mitochondrial acyl-CoA pool by exporting excess acyl groups. ezPeps supplies L-Carnitine as a sterile-filtered aqueous solution at 600 mg/mL in a 10 mL multi-use vial, a format suited to dose-ranging work in cell culture and other in vitro models.

Research Context:
L-Carnitine is commonly studied for its potential effects on:

  • Carnitine-dependent transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix
  • Beta-oxidation flux and acyl-CoA to acyl-carnitine ratio regulation in hepatocyte and myocyte models
  • Carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT-1 and CPT-2) enzyme kinetics
  • Mitochondrial bioenergetics and ATP yield under substrate-limited conditions
  • Buffering of the mitochondrial acyl-CoA pool and export of excess acyl groups
  • Skeletal muscle and cardiac tissue energy metabolism in animal research models
